Hyperqueens: Drag Was Already There

[ EN ]This photographic series is a return to origins. It represents the moment where it all began: a brief instant when these artists did not yet have the words to describe what they had just discovered.Five Mexican drag artists, Kobra Drag, Stacey Teen, ADN Unisex, and Andromeda, revisit childhood memories that trace the beginning of their transformations. Each queen brings a photograph, a fragment of memory where they first played with identity. A costume for a school festival, a face painted for no one, a fleeting permission to become someone else. These images are proof that the desire to transform, act, and play has always been part of their wild spirits.
In this series, the queens reimagine those childhood memories and honor them. They pay tribute to their inner child by recreating the memory exactly as they remember it, but this time through the lens of drag: the same silhouettes, the same characters, the same spirit, now expanded, exaggerated, and fully realized. What was once improvisation becomes intention.
This project acknowledges that their drag did not begin on a stage, in a dressing room, or under a spotlight. It began in those first moments of curiosity and freedom, when they first allowed themselves to be. What was once fragile becomes intentional. What was once play becomes power. Childlike instincts transform into the craft of the artist.“Drag did not come later. It was already there, waiting for us to develop it. It was never something we discovered; it is something we have always been becoming.”
These photographs are not recreations. They are continuations. Each artist recalls that first moment of transformation, of “drag” — the moment in which they saw themselves transform, expand, and fracture into possibility for the very first time. This moment was never insignificant. It was a spark. A gentle and luminous rupture that showed them they could exist beyond the norms.These hyperqueens are returning to those little girls. They are rediscovering them, and understanding the artists they have become.“Drag did not come later. It was already there, waiting for us to develop it. [ ES ] Esta serie fotográfica es un regreso al origen. Representa el momento en que todo comenzó: un instante breve en el que estas artistas aún no tenían las palabras para describir lo que acababan de descubrir.Cinco artistas drag mexicanas - Kobra Drag, Stacey Teen, ADN Unisex y Andromeda - revisitan recuerdos de infancia que trazan el inicio de sus transformaciones. Cada queen aporta una fotografía, un fragmento de memoria en el que jugó por primera vez con la identidad. Un disfraz para un festival escolar, un rostro pintado para nadie, un permiso fugaz para convertirse en alguien más. Estas imágenes son prueba de que el deseo de transformarse, actuar y jugar siempre ha sido parte de sus espíritus salvajes.
En esta serie, las queens reimaginan esos recuerdos de infancia y los honran. Rinden tributo a su niña interior recreando la memoria exactamente como la recuerdan, pero esta vez a través del lente del drag: las mismas siluetas, los mismos personajes, el mismo espíritu, ahora expandido, exagerado y plenamente realizado. Lo que antes fue improvisación se convierte en intención.Este proyecto reconoce que su drag no comenzó en un escenario, en un camerino ni bajo un reflector. Comenzó en esos primeros momentos de curiosidad y libertad, cuando se permitieron ser por primera vez. Lo que antes fue frágil se vuelve intencional. Lo que antes fue juego se convierte en poder. Estas fotografías no son recreaciones. Son continuaciones. Cada artista recuerda ese primer momento de transformación, de “drag”: el instante en que se vio transformarse, expandirse y fracturarse en posibilidad por primera vez. Ese momento nunca fue insignificante. Fue una chispa. Una ruptura suave y luminosa que les mostró que podían existir más allá de las normas.
