A Living Spectrum

Human: Tye Olson | Barcelona, Spain

Tye Olson has never belonged to one fixed definition. Minnesota-raised, California-cultured, and now rooted in Barcelona, his life has moved across cities, identities, stages, and forms of expression. Actor, model, drag artist, gender-fluid performer, community builder—each word holds part of the story, but none of them contain him completely.
At eighteen, Tye stepped into public visibility through cinema, landing the lead role in Watercolors and earning Best Actor honors at film festivals across the United States. It was an early encounter with being seen—not only as an actor, but as a body carrying emotion, vulnerability, desire, and truth. A few years later, at twenty-one, his life shifted again when he learned he was HIV positive. In a world that often teaches shame before understanding, Tye chose another path. He chose openness.

That visibility did not form behind a podium. It came through performance, humor, intimacy, drag, storytelling, and the radical act of existing without apology. Through his body and his work, Tye has continued to make space for others to recognize parts of themselves that may still be forming, healing, or waiting to be named.
That same instinct lives inside Boozy Drag Queen Events, the platform he founded to create experiences where LGBTQIA+ people, travelers, outsiders, and curious strangers can feel welcomed into something larger than a show. The atmosphere is playful, but the purpose runs deeper. Through drag brunches, bingo nights, performances, and community gatherings, Tye builds rooms where entertainment becomes connection, and laughter becomes a way of belonging.

"Identity does not need to be explained in order to be real."

This photographic series, created with photographer Nans Gillot, enters that space of transformation. It approaches gender not as something fixed, but as something alive—moving, shifting, and breathing. Through Nans’ lens, Tye becomes a living spectrum of energy: at times goddess, at times diva, at times almost otherworldly. The images do not try to define him. They observe him in motion.
Pigments fade across the skin. Colors melt into one another. Glitter, reflective surfaces, textured fabrics, and soft neon light create a world suspended between intimacy and spectacle. In some frames, Tye appears ceremonial, almost mythic. In others, he is raw, immediate, and present. Strength and fragility sit side by side, not as opposites, but as parts of the same body.

The collaboration between Nans and Tye unfolded through improvisation. Rather than following a fixed storyboard, the shoot became an exchange between performer, camera, light, and material. Each gesture opened another possibility. Each pose revealed another layer. What emerges is not a single portrait, but a sequence of becoming.
At its heart, A Living Spectrum is a portrait of queer presence as something expansive, radiant, and alive. It reminds us that identity does not need to be explained in order to be real. Sometimes it only needs space, light, and a body brave enough to keep becoming.
