[ EN ]From secretly writing songs imagined to be sung by other voices, to a small home studio in Canada where he took baby steps toward a microphone eager to hear his voice singing his own words, El Mehdi slowly blossomed — like a Damask rose through the cracks of both internal and external walls — into the queer Moroccan pop singer-songwriter and visual artist he unconsciously always wanted to be.His EP Salam — meaning “peace” and “hello” in Arabic — sweeps the listener away on a fresh Moroccan breeze, carrying in its wake vibrant blends of Darija, French, English, and Gnawa chants: hopeful, nostalgic, and romantic. Born after years when queerness and heritage remained “shy, held back, careful and tamed,” they now coexist freely, despite heavy stakes involving safety, family, mental health, and access to homeland.
“I’m walking an uneasy path by choosing my truth,” he says. “If embracing my truth now can make life a little safer… for those who come after me, that’s what truly matters.”Salam’s “SKIN,” coming from a deeply vulnerable place in the artist’s mind, captures powerlessness: childhood obsessions grasping for control over body, life, and future. The chorus begs, “Leave my skin behind, take me away,” but ends with a Gnawa choir chant — “daba, daba,” meaning “now, now” — shifting change from future hope to present reality.
He understands that his music carves a safe space for listeners, shaped by his lived experiences and by the wide range of artists who formed his musical identity: Najat Aatabou, Aicha Tachinouite, Houcine Slaoui, Mohamed Rouicha, Nancy Ajram, Ruby, Haifa Wehbe, the Pussycat Dolls, and Shakira’s Ojos Así, which reaches back to his childhood.For a young queer listener in Morocco, or anywhere on this beautiful earth, discovering his songs in secret, he says: “I want them to feel a life where every part of themselves is valued… Planting hope that there is nothing wrong with who they are. That guilt and shame are not theirs to hold.”El Mehdi’s voice, defiant and harmonious, plants those seeds.

من كتابة أغانٍ في السر، لأصواتٍ أخرى تغني كلماتها، وصولاً إلى استوديو منزِلِيّ في كندا خطا خطواته الأولى نحو ميكروفون لطالما انتظر صوته. تفتّح المهدي ببطءٍ كوردة جورية تشق طريقها عبر شقوقِ جدرانهِ الداخلية والخارجية ليصبح ما أراد أن يكون: مغني، كاتب أغاني، وفنان بصري مغربي وكويرآخر أغنية في 'سلام' تحت عنوان 'الجِلد' بالانكليزية، نبعت من مكان عميق الهشاشة في وجدان الفنان، لتعبر عن شعور عجز يتجلى في منذ الطفولة في هواجس في السيطرة على الجسد والحياة والمستقبل. حيث يغني المهدي: "اتركوا جلدي خلفي وخذوني بعيداً" قبل ان تنتهي الأغنية بترنيمة كناوية تردد: "دابا دابا…" الآن الآن، لتحول الأمل في المستقبل إلى واقع حاضر.
ألبومه المصغّر الأول تحت عنوان 'سلام' يأسر المستمعين في رحلة على نسيم مغربي يحمل في طياته مزيجاً من الأمل والحنين والعاطفة، تترجمهم الدارجة المغربية والفرنسية والإنجليزية وأهازيج الكناوة. بعد سنوات كانت فيها المثلية ومشاعر الانتماء تعيش فيه بخجل وتحفّظ وحذر، يأتي الآن في حرية ثمنها باهظ، يمس الأمان الشخصي والعائلة والصحة النفسية وصولاً إلى الوطن، قائلاً: "أصبح الطريق الذي أسير فيه وعر مع اختياري لحقيقتي، ولكن إن كان احتضاني لهذه الحقيقة اليوم سيجعل الحياة اكثر أماناً، ولو قليلاً، للذين سيأتون بعدي، فهذا هو ما يهم فعلاً

يدرك المهدي أن أغانيه تنحت مساحةً آمنة للمستمعين شكلتها تجاربه الشخصية وأصوات فنانين اخرين رسموا هويته الموسيقية من نجاة اعتابو، عائشة تاشنويت، حسين السلاوي، محمد رويشة، نانسي عجرم، روبي، هيفاء وهبي، فرقة بوسيكات دولز الأمريكية، وصولاً إلى أغنية 'أوخوس أسي' لشاكيرا التي صاحبته منذ الطفولة.
حين سألت المهدي عن رسالته لاي شاب/ة مغربي/ة يكتشفون أغانيه، ربما بالسر في المغرب أو في أي مكان من هذه الكرة الأرضية الجميلة، قال: "أريدهم أن يعيشوا حياة تُقدّر فيها جميع تفاصيلهم، وأن ازرع فيهم املاً أن لا جزء منهم فيه خطأ أو عيب، وأن مشاعر الخزي والذنب هم وزن ثقيل ليس ملكهم حتى يحملوه."
صوت المهدي المتناغم والمتحدي في آنٍ واحد يزرع تلك البذور.
