Glamour without the Drop

For Jaycie O’Day, glamour is not something that begins under the stage lights and disappears backstage. It is a constant state of construction, fantasy, and refusal. “People expect the illusion to drop,” she says, “but for me, behind the scenes is just as glamorous.”
That commitment to the full fantasy is central to her world: a place where the biggest wig in the room matters, champagne at the vanity matters, and eyeliner applied messily on the train can be just as beautiful as hours spent in full glam.
[ EN ]Jaycie’s drag is rooted in pleasure, but never emptiness. Her creative references reach into Club Kid history, especially the worlds of Susanne Bartsch and Walt Cassidy, whose images and interviews she studies closely. What draws her in is not nostalgia alone, but the audacity of it—the commitment to turning looks, being sickening, and doing it “just for the gag of it all.” In Jaycie’s hands, that legacy becomes something current: playful, exacting, and deeply self-possessed.“I’m the product of everything that I love,” she says. That love keeps evolving, and so does the work. But her grounding comes from refusing performance in its falsest sense. “I don’t fake anything.” Even in full dragzilla form, Jaycie is not becoming someone else. She is amplifying what is already there: the feminine, the whimsical, the excessive, the fabulous.
That excess is also political. For Jaycie, queer nightlife remains a form of resistance, especially in a moment when queer and trans people are under attack. To gather, to be visible, to be glamorous together, is not frivolous. It is the opposite of erasure.“I’m the product of everything that I love, and I don’t fake anything.”
Jaycie’s mission is much more immediate: whimsy, fulfillment, and fun as a way of moving through the world. Her creativity reminds us that freedom can be gorgeous, communal, bizarre, and covered in hair spray.
